Protection of Biodiversity in Australia: Is Killing Cats an Effective and Ethical Approach?

Regulators frequently turn to poisoning, shooting and lethal trapping, resulting in killing per se becoming the regulatory objective. In some jurisdictions this approach has extended to stray cats, as well as cats described as game animals. Yet, there is little evidence that in the long-term, broadscale killing has led to reductions in feral or stray cat numbers, or to improved environmental outcomes. Instead, killing raises challenging cat welfare issues that overlap with environmental management, calling for a renewed focus on the goal of mitigating environmental harm, rather than emphasizing the number of cats killed

New pasture plants intensify invasive species risk

Many invasive plants have escaped from pastures and now degrade natural areas and transform ecosystems. New pasture taxa are promoted to help achieve sustainable intensification of agriculture by increasing production without using more land. However, plant characteristics that increase production also increase invasion risk. Combined with inadequate regulation and management to establish large feed-plant populations, new taxa will likely exacerbate problems with invasive species. Livestock production accounts for 30% of the world's land area. Risks associated with invasive feed-plants have been largely overlooked, even by studies explicitly critiquing the environmental risks of sustainable intensification. We suggest a suite of protocols to reduce these risks in sustainable intensification of agriculture.

The first part of the paper concentrates on the challenges that electronic conveyancing brings to the operation of the land register, while the second part of me paper highlights some of the benefits that the proposed changes may bring. It is concluded that if the safety and security of electronic conveyancing prove to be workable, then the system has the capacity to enhance not only the conveyancing process but also the operation of the register and the title created by registration- Torrens title itself
