Statewide '911' system backed MADISON (AP) Establishing a statewide emergency telephone number would be a logical way to counteract the "confusing maze of numbers" now facing persons seeking to report an emergency, Acting Gov. Martin Schreiber said Tuesday. In a letter to Sen. Monroe Swan, Schreiber said he supported a bill to require public agencies to install such an emergency telephone system. The bill is now before Swan's Senate Committee on Governmental and Veterans Affairs.

Under the bill, persons in Wisconsin could get emergency aid by dialing the three-digit number 911, regardless of the type of emergency. "Our current system involves a confusing maze of numbers which must be confronted by anyone seeking to report an emergency, whether it is a fire, a robbery or a tornado," Schreiber said. However, Ray Reardon, executive 30,000 sign recall petitions against Simonson MADISON (AP) Organizers of a campaign to recall Dane County Judge Archie Simonson said Tuesday they had gathered 30,000 signatures on petitions demanding a recall election. The total exceeds the number required under state law to call such an election, and spokesmen for the Dane County Committee to Recall Judge Simonson said they hoped that the petitions could be filed next Monday. Simonson stirred a controversy with comments he made during a hearing last May on a sexual assault case involving a 15-year-old youth who pleaded no contest to the second degree sexual assault of a female classmate.

Simonson sentenced the youth to one year at home under court supervision. During the hearing, he referred to Madison's "sexual permissiveness" and women's "provocative clothing." "Are we supposed to take an impressionable person, 15 or 16 years of age, who can respond to something like that, and punish that person severely because they react to it normally?" Simonson was quoted as saying. If a recall election is held, the field of candidates apparently would be a large one because state law does not provide for primary elections as part of recall elections.
